Serum will not block your pores!

Updated: Oct 24, 2024

During my long career in Hair and Beauty, I've encountered many people who believe that applying oil to your skin will make it greasy.

However, oily skin can be a symptom of dehydration, causing the skin to overcompensate by producing excess sebum. This can lead to blocked pores and acne. A well-balanced serum for combination skin can effectively address these issues.

My good friend believes that using serum or anything oil-based will block her pores and cause acne. Upon one of her visits, I picked up her cream cleanser to check the ingredients. Over half had a high comedogenic rating. The higher the comedogenic rating, the greater the chance of your pores being blocked.

If you have combination skin, it's vital to choose products with a low comedogenic rating, such as grapeseed oil. This oil supplies acne-prone skin with linoleic acid, which helps regulate oil production. Grapeseed oil is also antimicrobial, so by attacking the bacteria deep in your pores, it helps clear your skin.

Careful formulation is necessary when creating a serum, particularly for combination skin. Let’s look at some of the other ingredients in The Purists Combination Serum and their benefits:

  • Broccoli Seed Oil – With a low comedogenic rating of 1, broccoli seed oil is rich in skin-soothing fatty acids Omega 6 and 9. These nutrients provide intense hydration without clogging pores while also calming irritated skin.

  • Rosehip Oil – This remarkable oil has many benefits, including a low comedogenic rating. It can help heal scars left by acne, has skin-balancing properties, and is suitable for both oily and dry skin. Rosehip oil also contains retinoids, which may help reduce the appearance of acne.

  • Hemp Oil – This oil has a comedogenic rating of 0, making it perfect for reducing shine and breakouts. It is excellent for moderating oil production while soothing inflammation caused by breakouts.

  • Tamanu Oil – This oil has antibacterial and antifungal properties with a comedogenic rating of 2. It also stimulates collagen production to aid wound healing while gently moisturising the skin.

  • Sacha Inchi Oil – With a comedogenic rating of 1, Sacha Inchi oil helps regulate oil production. It is very light and quickly absorbed by the skin, nourishing and helping with fine lines.

I hope the above information gives you the confidence to try a well-balanced serum. It will not clog your pores, cause breakouts, or make your skin oily and may be just what your skin was looking for! The Purist Minis are a great way to introduce a new product to your skin before committing to a full size.
